The talents of four Detroit-area artists are featured in “Figuratively Speaking…”, a newly published book of figure drawings. The artists, Amy Foster of Richmond, Candace Law ofBerkley, Anne Plutshack of Franklin and Janis Walker of West Bloomfield, all share a passion for drawing. They first met at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, where Foster teaches anatomy, portrait and figure drawing.

“This book is a coming together of four artists, each with our own vision, style, and vocabulary,” said Law, who organized the project.  “We are drawing the most challenging, always changing and most rewarding subject—the human figure.”

“The human body has been one of the mainstays of drawing for students and established artists for many years,” according to Plutshack. “It is a beautiful form capable of infinite variety and emotion and almost impossible not to respond to in a drawing.” Added Walker, “To take muscle, soft flesh, the line and curve of the body, and bring the life and energy you are seeing to paper is magical.”

“I have always been inspired by the drawings of the Great Masters—Leonardo DaVinci, Michelangelo and the other great artists of the Renaissance era”, said Foster. “Even though their paintings are masterpieces, it is their drawings that hold my fascination. The subtle line, the attention to detail and the emotion that they were able to produce with a few strokes are what inspire me to draw.”

The artists will be signing copies of the book at receptions on June 10 in Berkley and June 24 in Richmond. A selection of original drawings featured in the book will be displayed at the receptions and at Open Studio and Art Sale events to be held June 11-12 and June 25-26 in the same locations.

The full-color paperback book is 102 pages and published by Color & Ink Studio in Berkley. It is available online through Lulu.com and Amazon.com for $35 (plus shipping).
